Real-Time Innovations to Give Embedded Developers 'Instant Analysis' Capability
With ScopeTools 2.0

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb 17, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Today, Real-Time
Innovations, Inc. unveils the ScopeTools(TM) 2.0 suite for embedded software
developers using Wind River's Tornado(TM) II embedded development environment.
The ScopeTools are visualization tools for data monitoring, execution tracing,
performance tuning, and memory analysis. All four tools in the suite feature
'instant analysis,' providing simple, one-touch operation without code
instrumentation or recompilation.

Paul Zorfass, senior analyst with IDC/FTI, said, "Developers of real-time
embedded systems need to ensure reliability and must know what is going on in a
constrained environment. RTI, a long-time advocate of the real-world application
developer, provides tools that accelerate real-time development and are
important for engineers applications that range from antilock brakes to
telecommunications systems to Internet appliances."

Most advanced visualization tools have a relatively high barrier to usage.
Programmers often avoid using tools because of the extensive instrumentation or
recompilation required. 'Instant analysis' is thus much more than a convenience;
instant analysis is a fundamental technology that delivers greater productivity.
To provide instant analysis, RTI tools implement automatic configuration
detection, automated tool loading and initialization, on-line symbol table
analysis, tight debugger and Tornado integration, and on-the-fly code patching.

"Embedded developers face huge challenges working with systems that require
small footprints, speed, reliability, and short development schedules. Tools
have come a long way, but they are still underutilized. ScopeTools new 'Instant
analysis' capability realizes the productivity promised by visualization tools.
When you need the tool, 'one click' is all it takes to see what's going on,"
states Stan Schneider, president and CEO of RTI. "The ScopeTools analyze data
activities, CPU performance, memory usage, and function traces on production
code running at full speed with virtually no impact."

"As a member of our WindLink(TM) partner program, RTI helps extend the
Tornado(TM) environment by bringing high-productivity tools to real-time
developers. RTI has a unique ability to apply advanced software research to
real-world applications. ScopeTools 2.0 will be valuable tools for all Tornado
developers," adds Dave Sheaffer, director of corporate product marketing, Wind
River.

About ScopeTools 2.0

ScopeTools(TM) 2.0 is a suite of four tools for real-time visualization. The
tools give you the visibility you need to understand your real-time system and
make it work. Each tool offers simple, one-touch operation without code
instrumentation or recompilation, and each is built for minimal intrusion and
impact on system performance.

StethoScope(R), the real-time data monitor, lets you watch any variable in your
system while it runs. One of the original WindPower tools, it is now the most
popular third-party tool for Tornado.

TraceScope(TM), the execution-flow tracing tool, eliminates the chore of
instrumenting code with printf() statements to understand dynamic program
operation. It instantly shows which routines in a program were called, when they
were called, and what arguments were passed. RTI will release TraceScope for the
first time with ScopeTools 2.0.

ProfileScope(TM), the dynamic CPU execution profiler, measures code performance
function by function. It provides the information programmers need to write
fast, efficient code.

MemScope(TM), the instant memory analyzer, shows you which functions are
allocating and, perhaps, leaking memory. It ensures faultless long-term
operation.

Availability

RTI ScopeTools 2.0 for the Tornado II environment for VxWorks 5.4 / Tornado II
on Windows and Solaris host platforms will be available on March 1, 2000. The
ScopeTools are available through Wind River Systems as part of their
WindPower(TM) Tools bundled with Tornado. Pricing for the Tornado Professional
package with the ScopeTools begins at $5,995 with discounts for 5-user bundles.

API seeks to unify network-processing architectures
eet.com
Perhaps the mention of 64-bit chips was in relation to the Softcom 64-bit chip ? Perhaps the Softcom chip will fit into the over-all IXA architecture somehow (just guessing). Softcom is owned by Intel.

Here's an old (July 98) article on Softcom.
Startup could redefine network-processor silicon
