Biomedical melt-up: Biotechnology shares Wednesday turned in one of their
best single-day performances ever. Various biotech stock indexes in the U.S.
stock market rose 12 percent and more for the day -- after positive patent

29 percent. The South San Francisco company is developing ointments that
treat damaged and wrinkled skin. One ointment is being tested as a salve for
hemorrhoid symptoms. Other products address waning sexual energy in
aging men.

Another tiny company, Alliance Pharmaceutical (ALLP: news, msgs), saw
its shares rise 15 percent. A product the San Diego company is testing in

conference.

Bulletin-board stocks -- sometimes known as penny stocks -- fared best of all.
One of them, Advanced Viral Research (ADVR: news, msgs) of Yonkers, N.Y.,

sells for 38 cents, giving the company a market worth of $117 millio
