S Korea's SK Telecom In Alliance With
China Unicom

SEOUL -- South Korea's leading mobile phone service provider SK Telecom
Co. (SKM) said Thursday it has entered a strategic alliance with China
Unicom, China's second largest telecom company.

Under the contract, SK Telecom and China Unicom will cooperate in
developing technology for the next-generation mobile phone service,
International Mobile Telecommunications for 2000, or IMT-2000, as well as
mutually cooperate in advancing into overseas markets.

Both companies will also jointly design new CDMA networks and share
know-how in marketing and consulting, the South Korean company said.

At 0448 GMT (11:48 p.m. EST Wednesday), shares of SK Telecom were
down 500,000 won ($1=KRW1,124) at KRW4.15 million on volume of
11,280 shares.

We on the SanDisk Thread are encouraged by the inclusion of MMC and SDMC as the preferred removable storage medium for Launchpad. The fact that functionality within the CDMA chipset and associated system software will interface with SanDisk's high density flash memory solution is a strong endorsement of SanDisk's position within this market. The JV between SanDisk and Toshiba likely did not hurt either...

It is interesting that the Symbian Venture has also selected SanDisk as their removable memory solution in their WAP version of a cell phone/communicator named "Quartz"...

I think it is apparent that functionality such as compressed audio, compressed video and GPS/mapping/localization are added to consumer mobile telephony/computing devices the need for small form factor, high capacity flash memory will grow in step.
