This is interesting, but underestimates the distinctions on the Right. Second, the whole thing turns on the accuracy of his assessment of Brookings and some similar think tanks, which I would dispute. Third, think tanks are often cited in relationship to their influence, and their perspective is often inferred from the context of the citation. Thus, Heritage got an unusual number of citations in the 80s because it was a particular influence on the Reagan administration. I never saw a citation in the Washington Post where it was not clear, directly or indirectly, that it was a conservative think- tank. Fourth, once a think- tank has a reputation, the likelihood that it will be characterized diminishes. There are few people who read newspapers on a regular basis who do not know that the Heritage Foundation is conservative, the American Enterprise Institute is center/right, and the Institute for Policy Studies is leftist. It is like citing National Review and Mother Jones: everyone knows their orientation.....
