Both of these companies could face competition that they can't handle if they go it alone. At first blush it seemed such a combo would be ersatz, but an investigation of the two company's product lines shows that this merger may be critical. They both have niches that may not be invaded, but could likely be superseded. They both have to take what they have and find a new more comprehensive product offering.

Do they have much option about "best interests" or "must carry" given the positioning of LU, NT, CSCO?

Should layer x be preserved and co-carried or be imaged in power?

Is the resistance point to advance to a more comprehensive model located at software and hardware or in the refusal of all participants to avoid extra risk? These sophisticated technologies must evolve rather than mutate. It's too expensive to make a serious error in product release. A merger diminishes this risk because it is a pooling of knowledge.

The threat of technological obsolescence on product launch always exists. It seems the best protection from it is to develop a superior product. Maybe these two companies realize they need a partner capable of taking both to a better offering.
