John,<<<I always assumed that IT professionals would first choose the applications they want to run, then select the appropriate operating system, then choose the appropriate hardware. You imply that their decision would be based on the hardware first.>>>

I am assuming that the Itanium is targeting the Internet economy as envisioned by Andy Grove:

<<<Business-to-business e-commerce now only amounts to $400 billion annually. In four years, it will hit $7 trillion, which still will only be a portion of the $100 trillion in overall business commerce. Eventually, three types of applications will dominate the Internet, he said: information applications for finding or aggregating information; transactional applications, for consumer purchases; and market applications for business-to-business commerce. >>>

In that environment, I think Linux has, today, the necessary tools and support to succeed in as opposed to the current server market used mostly in Corporate LANs and WAN's where microsoft tools and applications have a stranglehold. But, I'm not the one that has any current experience in this environment. I'm operating mostly on intuition.

I believe Amy, Tony, Fred and some of the others are in a much better position to comment on this.
