Freide faces OSHA fines
FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

PASCAGOULA - The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed $126,000 in fines for Friede Goldman Halter Inc. in connection with alleged safety violations at the company's west shipyard on Bayou Casotte.

OSHA also proposed $18,200 in fines for seven on-site contractors cited for violations.

The citations were issued last week. Friede Goldman Halter and the contractors have 15 working days to contest the charges and the fines.

Friede Goldman Halter spokesman John Hastings said Wednesday that he did not have enough information about the proposed fines to comment.

The citations follow a safety inspection of the yard ordered after an August 1999 accident that claimed the lives of three workers. Odist Weaver of Mount Vernon, Ala.; Jose Ignacio Chavez, 31, of Pascagoula; and Donald Curry, 28, of Texas, died Aug. 12 when scaffolding collapsed while they were working on a rig in the Friede Goldman Halter yard.

The fines levied against the other contractors were for violations discovered during the inspection but were not related to the fatal accident.

Clyde Payne, OSHA's Jackson Area director, said the agency's fatality investigation was followed by comprehensive safety and health investigations of the company's west and east yards.

The investigation resulted in two serious safety citations against Friede Goldman Halter for violations involving exposing workers to falls. The expanded inspection produced 37 additional serious citations.

OSX is rallying into the close. I think we can make new highs from here. 90 is just a temporary sticking point. Lets not forget the OSX still has to do a lot of catching up to the price of oil. I think a lot of people were waiting to buy until the inevitable news of OPEC production increases came out, and now that it is coming out and it's not the end of the world, they're making more of a commitment to energy stocks. Note also natural gas price is up.
