Mohan,

I was renting a 2 bedroom in Brookline for $1350 in 1994, and a similar two bedroom, again in Brookline, for $1785 in 1999. That's an annualized increase of 5.7% (compounded, of course, as simple interest will give ridiculously large increases). I guess you got a really good deal when you rented the two bedroom for $1000 in 1994, whereas your friend and I were not so lucky in 1999.
