Thrilling AIDS Discovery

Human Genome Sciences (Nasdaq: HGSI) may hold in its hand a discovery that could prevent AIDS.

Some people encounter poison ivy and never experience a reaction, while others are deathly allergic. The reason is that about 10% of our population express a gene that inhibits the allergic response to the stealthy culprit.

When the AIDS epidemic first caught the world by storm, it was widely agreed that there was no protective mechanism that would prevent contraction of the HIV virus that causes AIDS. But several years ago, a small subset of people was discovered that engaged in repeated high-risk HIV activities yet never contracted the disease.

Research passionately ensued in search of the protective mechanism that was responsible. Scientists discovered that these patients lacked a common receptor on the surface of their cells, known as the CCR5 receptor. This has led to the belief that the CCR5 receptor is a critical entry point for HIV into cells within the body. Without this receptor, HIV cannot enter the cells and is impotent in its attempt to replicate. (cont)
