VG;

I'm disappointed to see that you've made the decision not to go Windows 2000 on your laptop. There is a lot of benefit to going to Windows 2000 on a laptop, as it adds all of the security, reliability, etc of Windows 2000 but also does everything that Win98 can on a laptop, and then some.(plug and play, hot swap devices, power management, etc) One thing that a lot of people running Windows 98 today forget is that moving to Windows 2000 does represent a migration to NT, and thus application and hardware compatibility needs to be viewed in the same light as a Win 98 to NT 4 migration. That being said, I've seen a number of upgrades from Win 98, including my own Compaq armada go extremely well. I suggest the low risk alternative to your decision...take a look at the online hardware compatibility tool for windows 2000 and then decide whether or not to give it a try.
