What Stockhawk posted on the JDSU thread I believe is correct but he didn't reference a source so I can't verify. However, if you search around the Fed sites, NY Fed or National Fed, they might have some info on it. <g>

Margin in the US currently represents about 1.6% of total US market cap. That is on the high side for the past decade, and is close to the high reached before the 1987 crash.

WSJ had an article on 2/15/00 on margin debt. Here's a paragraph from that article - " Margin debt now equals 1.57% of market value, equal to its peak in the fall of 1987 ahead of the October 1987 stock-market crash, according to Bianco Research, although different market value measures suggest the ratio was somewhat higher in the early 1980s. By comparison, that ratio approached 30% in 1929."
