You have hit on perhaps the major dividing line between successful short sellers and unsuccessful short sellers.

Those who short sell well, when confronted with evidence that refutes a short position, will cover and go fight another battle.

Those who are destined to lose money short selling will tend to continue fighting a losing battle, by either claiming that the evidence is flawed or finding new reasons to keep shorting the same stock.
