Jim, thanks for posting the ITU document outlining the royalty recommendations that are being developed. It has confirmed my belief that this is a misguided effort and will self-destruct due to it's unfair treatment of those who have done the most to further the technology. Hopefully, the self-destructing nature of 3G will become more apparent to wireless operators worldwide which will probably help accelerate the adoption of IS-95 and thus HDR and 1XRTT.

Of course there is still that pesky problem of the large installed GSM base. Maybe IDC will win the Ericy case, thus giving operators added incentive to move away from technologies that are burdened with heavy royalty fees. Operators might find it more cost effective to move to 5Mhz 3G CDMA and get all their licenses in one neat little package, taking advantage of the '94 agreement with IDC. Of course we don't know if this is possible yet but I don't think it is very far-fetched given what we have seen so far. I trust you have seen Qualcomm's press release outlining all the features bundled with their new mobile station modem?

That's how MSFT got where they are today, by offering the most integrated stuff for the smallest price. It's getting more interesting by the day.
