Uncle Frank,

GM chose Bell Atlantic to set up a national network of wireless telephone service for its OnStar communications service. Bell Atlantic uses CDMA. As you saw in the link you provided, the cellular service should be available by the middle of this year. Gm will buy blocks of air time from Bell Atlantic. GM plans on eventually link this service to a handheld unit.

QCOM bought Snaptrack to provide GPS in handheld units. I'm not aware of any other way right now to provide GPS (necessary for Onstar service) in a handheld service. It would seem that GM's Onstar & the Virtual Advisor service will have to be compatible with CDMA.

Now consider QCOM's recent news regarding Wireless Internet Launchpad Suite To Accelerate Growth of Wireless Applications......

I am following the GM/Onstar/AOL/GMGC/BEL deal as I hold a large position in GMGC, the VUI provider to the Virtual Advisor/internet access/e-mail/etc. service for Onstar. I am also very long on QCOM (my #1 holding). I just don't see how they will get this service rolled out by mid-year unless it is CDMA based.
