Alcatel (SBF:CGEP) no comment on Newbridge bid report

Reuters, Feb 17, 2000 17:38 hrs

PARIS, Feb 17 (Reuters) - French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel (SBF:CGEP) declined on Thursday to comment on newspaper reports it was in "serious" talks to take over Canadian network service provider Newbridge Networks Corp. (TSE:NNC) (NYSE:NN).

"It is Alcatel's policy never to comment on rumours," Alcatel spokesman Klaus Wustrack told Reuters.

The Canadian Globe and Mail newspaper on Thursday cited industry sources as saying Alcatel could unveil a deal with the struggling Canadian company as early as next Tuesday.

Alcatel is reported to be the only serious contender after two others -- Sweden's Ericsson (SWED:LME.B) and Germany's Siemens AG -- dropped out of talks, the paper said.

A recent report in Canada's National Post said Alcatel chief executive Serge Tchuruk was keen to buy Newbridge but the French company's management was reluctant.

Alcatel shares closed down 1.15 percent at 259 euros on the Paris stock market on Thursday.

Newbridge shares were trading up 0.75 percent at C$50.25 in Toronto at 1607 GMT. paris.newsroom@reuters.com)).
