nt's core competence is communication technology and that includes IP, FO and wireless. metaphorically those are the highways. a metaphor for applications would be the cars that travel on the highways. if you are one of only 3 or 4 highway builders, you have an enormous edge. if you then go into making cars when hundreds of people are going into that, you blunt your edge, diffuse your effort, direct your money away from r&d needed to keep your technological edge.
now mr roth is a brilliant guy, and he may see something that makes that worthwhile. perhaps he's concerned about revenues after the Internet is fully built out. the question then would be: are applications the solution?
but you are unable to distinguish between nt's former core and it's present core - or evidently what the term core competency is. until you are able to understand the issue - and until you learn some manners - you should keep quiet.
you should try to understand the tone of these discussions, to note the gentility and pleasant exchange. have you noticed anyone here tell anyone to keep quiet? and you should wonder about yourself: why did you not notice it?
