Automotive Electronics: The `Enabler' of Future Vehicle Options; Topic
Addressed at SAE 2000 World Congress

What types of vehicle options will consumers demand in the next century? While
no one is quite sure, one thing is certain -- consumers will want entertainment
features that are easy to operate and affordable, and automotive electronics
will enable this to happen.

In "A Vision of the Future of Automotive Electronics," Daniel K. Ward and Harold
L. Fields of Delphi Delco Electronics Systems, address these issues in a paper
presented at SAE 2000 World Congress.

Ward and Fields say electronic technology will enable the vast majority of
automotive improvements desired by consumers. While this is great news for the
auto electronics industry, they say the real challenge is to produce electronic
systems that are not only desirable, but also marketable and able to be
manufactured.

In the paper, they stress the importance of a clear visioning process to
identify and develop innovative products that consumers will actually want to
buy. They also share Delphi Automotive Systems' list of "next century winners"
such as X-by-Wire Control Systems, Collision Avoidance, and Advanced Energy
Systems.

-- X-by-wire systems will help eliminate the need for excessive
maintenance over the life of a vehicle. X-by-wire systems, which can
control steering, throttle, braking and suspension, eliminate
mechanical links from driver's controls to the control actuator. By
eliminating mechanical links, X-by-wire systems reduce raw material
and labor costs in the manufacturing process. They also help improve
fuel efficiency because vehicles can be made lighter.
-- Collision avoidance systems inform drivers of impending danger such as
a possible crash or a dangerous out-of-control situation. Consisting
of radar and vision sensors, warning displays, brake, throttle,
steering control systems (X-by-wire), and processors and software,
collision avoidance systems could eventually control the vehicle,
making corrective action to advert danger.
-- Advanced energy systems provide power and range required by the highly
automated vehicles of the future. To power new options such as in-car
computing, new energy generation/storage and control systems are
needed. In addition, as engines move toward hybrid and fully electric
designs, new motors/generators, converters/inverters and storage
batteries must be developed.

Whoa! You ought to get some sleep, you seem a little cranky. :) I certainly didn't mean to insult you (although your hurtful intentions came across pretty clear). I'll excuse your ignorance due to your apparent lack of sleep and recency on this thread. I just meant that if it's **OTOT!** then it's spam. Agreed, CJ. There are those who may think one company or technology exists in a narrow little world. Without an understanding of the larger context in which any company operates, however, it is not possible to understand the company. Anyone who thinks competing or related technologies are not worthy of mention here is either a fool or incapable of thinking in the gestalt of a larger environment.

Similarly, it would seem that some here lack an understanding of what SI is and some of the "common law" regarding terminology. First, "spam" is a commercial post(s) to several threads that is intended for the enrichment or benefit of the poster or his affiliates. While this may often result in a discussion of what is or is not spam, informational news releases posted contextually certainly are not even remotely in the category of spam. Second, there is an easy determinate of maturity on SI. In the profile, it is indicated as "Member Since." Since we are all anonymous to some degree, it is of no consequence who may be older than another. Time on SI is the only verifiable indicator of seniority. And with your venerable "Member Since" date, many posters across SI should bow to your maturity and wisdom. Finally, intelligent posts take a certain amount of restraint and ability to express a thought to make a cogent point. IMO, "that's BS" is a rather plebeian way to make a point, and does little to engender any support for a differing opinion.

I compliment you, CJ, on your mature and thoughtful posts.

Frankly, I don't mind a little off topic stuff now and again because this board can get so damn boring. Always like to read about good tips from other intelligent, fellow investors. (Good tips and intelligent posts don't make for spamming,IMO)

I've been on the GLE board a long time now, and would like to see more postings to fill in the slow GLE periods, even if they are a bit off-topic. (and we veterans have seen many long spells between Press releases)
