The statement which I found most encouraging was that Qualcomm was producing handsets at a rate of 14000 per month now plus 1000 fixed units a month with about 4000 completed at December 31. It would have been nice if he had said that they were spending the money to double that rate, but he did not. Yet there are nearly 50% more handsets being built for CDMA than I expected. Part of the reason for that is probably jawboning by Globalstar, but perhaps there are some orders to justify it also.

I think JGoren's point is well made about Qcom not making a habit of tying up with losers. Mot was the primary sponsor for Irid; let each draw their own conclusion re:the relationship. This (Qcom involvement) has been one of the items I put in the "positives" column when reviewing the position. Not saying it can't happen but the Q's management has certainly shown excellent and exceptional judgement in this area (partnering) to-date.

Best.

If you listen to the rest of the qcom analyst conference, the emphasis on where qcom puts its resources to spur cdma growth and qcom shareholder value, you will feel a lot better about G*; qcom wouldn't have done it unless it is confident G* will be big commercial and profit-making success. for example, one of things qcom said it would use proceeds of the July stock offering was to make investments in cos, ventures that would spur cdma growth; mgt stated that the places it has already invested were worth, I can't recall, many times the money invested. that's the philosophy qcom looks at--grow its own biz and make money with the increase in value of the successful biz it invests in. ie, holds true with G* too. qcom hasn't made any major blunders yet, so keep the faith
