Yes, thank you - that was the issue (pure optical vs. e-o-e). Gilder is definitely in the latter camp - has been pumping for it for a long time. In fact he is down on Cisco because they depend on the e-o-e model for so much of their revenue (the Cerent e-o-e product for example).

Anyway, would like to read the article you mention. Thanks in advance for looking for it.

This url, when read in conjunction with Gilder's piece on high noon at Cisco City (and the seven Sonet layers/cost and time factors in routing/switching, which might be reduced to three or four) gives a coherent picture of the metrics in pure vs. o-e-o, imho.
