I agree that the term is in the common parlance to indicate that a person was taken advantage of, or dominated, or bested in a contest, or similar. There's a whole vocabulary which is quite colorful, some of the terms which can be used in polite society include "kissing up," "sucking up," and "brown-nosing." The phrase which Ish used is ordinarily not used around women, in my experience, but I can't fault Ish for being egalitarian. Or maybe it's more common to speak like that around women in his milieu. I don't think I've ever read a sociological or anthropological text on the topic, but it's ripe for one.
