James, Can you suggest a good site to learn the basics about optical transmission?

Long haul products have a problem.
The problem is the installed base of fiber.
Ciena is in the right place. They are iteratively selling into the market for equipment that makes better and better use of the installed base.

The problem with long haul fiber transmission is that it requires the laying of long fibers that have no imperfections for that distance. That, in practice, is not all that practical in many environments.

For transoceanic use? yes. It is.

As for the bandied about "delay" at the E-O interface? Come, come. This is not a big deal. The up and comer that is in direct competition with fiber is satellite. Now there's some delay issues.
