RESEARCH ALERT - Microsoft reiterated as buy
NEW YORK, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Lehman Bros. said on Friday that it had reiterated its buy rating of Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) and its price target of $130.

-- The Windows 2000 product line is the company's first serious competitive offering in the UNIX-dominated enterprise market. According to Giga Information Group, a server running Windows 2000 and selling for $150,000 can compete effectively against a UNIX system that costs two or three times as much.

-- There will only be modest impact from Windows 2000 this quarter. The material impact should begin in the June quarter, with acceleration increasing into fiscal 2001.

-- Shares of Microsoft were down one at 98-5/8 in trade on the Nasdaq stock market.

Well, I can't fault them for not wanting to park money in the slow lane with softee, but looking at that list of high-flying favs, e.g. CMRC, ARBA, VERT, does any one of them actually earn any money? In my opinion most of these companies will never have the earnings to pay back investors buying at these multiples. Perhaps that doesn't matter. After all, as long as the share price climbs and you get out before an IOM-like denoument then you make out like a bandit. And of course these VCs get in with a low basis before the stocks go public, and afterward they're the guys selling you, the investing public, these stocks, eh? I think I'll go see Boiler Room this weekend!
