BSkyB To Offer Satellite Boxes With Hard Discs
Jump to first matched term
LONDON, ENGLAND, 2000 FEB 15 (NB) -- By Steve Gold, Newsbytes. Unconfirmed reports suggest that BSkyB is preparing to launch its third generation of digital satellite receiver set-top boxes (STB) in the UK.

The digital satellite STBs, as well as supporting satellite broadcasts and Internet e-mail/Web surfing, will come with two hard discs. The hard discs will be used for real-time TV program recording, as seen on standalone "hard disc" TV recorders such as the Replay and TiVo STBs seen in the US.

One disc will be used for regular TV broadcast recording, storing up to 12 hours of programming, and outputting the recording to a regular VCR if required. The download to the VCR will be programmable, allowing users to program their STBs to "dump" programs to their VCRs overnight, if required.

The second disc, which will be of smaller recording capacity, will be used for real-time recordings, like the Replay and TiVo boxes, and will allow viewers to "pause" programs they are watching so they can answer the phone or engage in other activities.

Viewers can then "resume" watching the program a few minutes later, while the rest of the program is continuing to record to the STB's hard disc.

Currently, BSkyB offers its digital satellite STBs free of charge to subscribers, only requiring a 12-month subscription contract.

The third generation boxes, however, will be sold for around 200 pounds ($320).

BSkyB might offer early adopters of its first generation digital satellite STBs - who originally paid around 200 pounds for their boxes in late 1998 - an upgrade deal on the new boxes, which are expected to ship some time next month.

BSkyB did not return telephone calls before deadline.

BSkyB's Web site is at sky.co.uk .
