Not only did I read George Orwell's 1984 novel in.... 1984 as a high school student, but I've read it again in 1994 and I've re-written its "Goldberg" chapter --to make it more compatible with the actual history of post-WWII Europe.

Unfortunately, my 20+-page essay is in French and I have not had the time yet to translate it in English --you'll be the first to know about it.

Now, you pretend that I can't tell the difference between propaganda and reality??!? In my previous post I was addressing Europe and its likely gloomy future.... This is not just newscasts and NY-Times essays I'm telling you about!! This is my everyday REALITY. Obviously, I could deal with it the easy way, that is repeating the same BS you and I hear and watch on the mainstream media --is that what you mean by PROPAGANDA?

I'm a quickwitted guy, I don't want to be fooled by the Establishment-controlled media-biz, so I don't buy their benign-neglect attitude toward the rise of the far-right in Europe. A key factor that leads me to such a pessimistic analysis is the vulnerability of the conservatives (remember my 30+20=50 formula). Up to now, the only major failure for Europe's neofascistic party is the split within France's Front National, between Messrs. Bruno Megret and Jean-Marie Le Pen. However, as far as their electorate is concerned, the political landscape was not much affected: Pasqua-de Villiers's RPF scored a healthy 14% in the June 1999 European election.

In Belgium, Haider's halo effect is working already: several prominent Flemish personalities are already suggesting that Flemish Christian-Democrats should contemplate alliances with neofascistic Vlaams Blok for the next municipal poll scheduled for October 2000.

Again, as I put it, neofascism is not about Nazi extravaganza: think of it as the outcome of Europe's political burnout.... A stealth totalitarianism, an insidious blend of regular fascism (police everywhere), ubiquitous surveillance (urban cameras, ID-smartcards, computer databases), growing ghettoization, intensifying harassment of aliens or dissident individuals, and a democratic facade provided by conservative frontmen and well-mannered, polite fascists....

Gus.
