I haven't done it very often, but the few times I have its resulted in very quick fills. I think it's because the trade is already approved and so doesn't need to be seen by a "human".

The only problem is if your price is too far off the market, they'll refuse your order.

I have also placed orders the night before and noticed that when I changed it during trading hours, the order seems to get filled much faster.

I find there is a terrible problem with delays on stop orders which often get filled much below the price limit. If the market is falling and you want to be sure to sell, modify your stop order to market order. This is often much faster and safer than waiting for a confirmation.
