INRANGE Technologies' Channel Extender Receives Certification From Hitachi Data Systems
9801 SNS Storage Networking System Approved to Support HRC and HORC Business Continuance and Disaster Recovery Plans for Both Mainframe and Open Systems Environments
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- INRANGE Technologies, a leading provider of storage networking solutions, announced today that its 9801 SNS high-performance channel extender has been officially certified by Hitachi Data Systems for use with both Hitachi Remote Copy (HRC) and Hitachi Open Remote Copy (HORC) disk mirroring applications.

The growing demand for storage has created a corresponding demand for mainframe backup systems that can protect precious business information and restore access to it instantly in the event of a failure. Hitachi's response was HRC, and as organizations began to rely increasingly on open systems solutions, HORC. With HORC, open system users are provided with the same level of assurance as their mainframe counterparts.

``With business becoming increasingly data-centric, disaster recovery and business continuance plans are becoming much more critical,' said Jack Consoli, Technical Alliances Manager for INRANGE. ``One of the problems disk mirroring systems have had to contend with is that they normally operate over fiber, which isn't always available. Now with the 9801 SNS, disk systems can operate over telephone lines where fiber is unavailable or impractical.'

The 9801 SNS is an advanced storage networking platform that delivers high-performance, transparent channel extension over standard telephone networks. The 9801 SNS extends HRC and HORC disk mirroring storage technology for distances of up to 100 miles. A high-availability system based on field- proven FramePassing(TM) technology, the 9801 SNS features superior data compression to significantly reduce network costs and exceptional bandwidth utilization for outstanding performance.

The 9801 SNS is a key alternative to fiber, connecting distributed sites via telco (ATM OC3, T3/E3, T1/E1 and HSSI) lines. HRC is certified for use with the 9801 SNS in synchronous or semi-synchronous peer-to-peer disk copy applications designed for MVS environments (HRC asynchronous certification is currently underway). HORC is the corresponding synchronous application for Unix, NT and other open systems. Typically, a prime disaster recovery solution requires getting the mirrored data to a separate power grid. Often, where long distances are involved, this means using telecommunication lines as opposed to long distance fiber.

``The INRANGE 9801 SNS using the Hitachi Data Systems remote copy software suite allows customers additional connectivity and flexibility options for continuous application availability,' said Richard Search, Hitachi Data Systems Vice President of Storage Product Management and Marketing. ``Mainframe and open systems customers alike have another choice of using telecommunication lines for transmitting mission critical data over much greater distances.'

INRANGE Technologies is a leading supplier of enterprise network infrastructure technologies to the Fortune 500 market, with an eye toward the future of network convergence. Leveraging intellectual capital from across today's three strategic network axes, the company's family of solutions spans Storage Networking, Datacomm Networking, and Telephony Networking, bringing true enterprise-class availability, scalability, and management capabilities to the most demanding networking applications. INRANGE is a proud member of the SPX Corporation family of high-value companies, with sales and service locations in 70 countries.

Interphase Announces Strategic Business Initiatives -- Includes New Fibre Channel Product Family to Capitalize on Growing Storage Market
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 2000--Interphase Corporation (Nasdaq:INPH - news), a leader in high performance computer and telecommunication technologies, today announced that it will introduce a new family of Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) as part of a comprehensive strategy that positions the company to aggressively pursue the Fibre Channel HBA market. Other initiatives in the strategy, which also targets the telecommunication server controller market, include the substantial expansion of the company's global distribution channels, the broadening of its OEM customer base, formalizing its strategic partners program, and the introduction of new high-performance controllers aimed at next-generation telecommunications servers.

``We have implemented an aggressive strategy for the year 2000 and beyond which includes exciting new product introductions, continued growth of our channels to market and stronger industry partnerships which are necessary to support our planned market penetration,' said Greg Kalush, president and CEO of Interphase. ``As a result, we've focused our investment and resources in five key initiatives that we believe will position Interphase for continued growth and success in our chosen markets.'

Next-generation Fibre Channel HBA Product Family

A recent International Data Corporation report estimates that the typical Fortune 1000 company's storage needs will grow from 40 terabytes in 1998 to more than 300 terabytes by 2001. This, combined with a significant reduction in storage costs over the last decade, is fueling the storage area network (SAN) market, which is expected to grow by 85 percent annually and top $15 billion by 2002.

To capitalize on the growth of the HBA market segment, estimated to be $2.2 billion by 2002, Interphase will introduce a new line of fourth-generation Fibre Channel adapters. The initial product launch is scheduled for April of this year. Targeted for a diverse number of storage connectivity applications ranging from entry level storage attachment to high-end, high bandwidth enterprise SAN connectivity, the new family includes:

Single-port Fibre Channel Storage Connectivity -- A full duplex Gigabit Fibre Channel HBA designed to provide cost-effective storage connectivity for server-attached storage or basic SAN servers.
Dual-port Fibre Channel Storage Connectivity -- A high performance Fibre Channel HBA that provides two independent full duplex Gigabit Fibre Channel ports from a single adapter.
2 Gbps Fibre Channel Storage Connectivity -- A full featured, maximum performance Fibre Channel HBA that provides full duplex 2 Gbps Fibre Channel connectivity for up to 400 MBps throughput.
The new adapters include a broad suite of operating system drivers that feature FibreView(TM) Enterprise SAN connectivity management. FibreView Enterprise saves costly resources by allowing the network administrator to control and manage adapter connections from anywhere within the enterprise.

``The growth of the Internet, the proliferation of stored data including audio, video, text and graphics, as well as growth in online storage required for corporate Web initiatives are contributing to an unprecedented need for high performance storage connectivity,' said Roger Woolley, Senior Director of Global Marketing at Interphase. ``Our mission is to provide the industry's highest performing and most comprehensive family of adapter products available for the SAN market.'

Aggressive Expansion of Global Distribution Channels

The global IT customer is becoming increasingly dependent on system integrators and specialized value added resellers to help them deal with the complexities of next-generation networking solutions and technologies. Further, as user awareness increases for the benefits of Fibre Channel-based storage solutions, resellers have the potential to become a significant factor in overall market penetration. Interphase is establishing relationships with distributors and resellers promoting SAN solutions on a global basis. In a related announcement, Interphase today disclosed a new distribution agreement with Tech Data, one of the nation's largest distributors of computer peripheral equipment.

Diversification of Customer Base

Another key initiative for the company is expanding its global OEM customer base for both its Fibre Channel and telecommunication server controller product lines. To this end, Interphase currently has beta evaluations underway or scheduled for its new product offerings with existing OEM partners, potential new OEMs, and select end-user accounts.

Strategic Partnership Program

Extending strategic alliances with other vendors to promote standardization and enhance interoperability is paramount to the Interphase strategy. This initiative also includes the company's efforts to actively seek opportunities for joint technology development with key strategic partners to further develop innovative solutions for the market.

As a related component of its partnering activities, Interphase will continue its drive to proactively promote interoperability and standards-development for high-speed communications technologies. The company is an active member in key standards organizations, industry consortiums and testing groups including the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA), the FibreAlliance, the HP Open SAN Initiative, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), the PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturer's Group (PICMG), the ANSI committee and the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab (NHIOL). Interphase also hosts multi-vendor Fibre Channel interoperability tests at its Dallas headquarters in conjunction with the FCIA and NHIOL, and Uniform Driver Interface technology in conjunction with Project UDI.

Is the pace pickin up again? I think another notch or two.
