SINA.com took top honors in CNNIC's most recent December 1999 survey, published on January 18. CNNIC is an official body modeled after InterNIC in the US, with similar functions of providing directory, database services, assignment of domain names and IP addresses, education and information services. It is managed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of China's most prestigious academic institutions. The survey relied on data collected through posting on-line questionnaires on popular Web sites and conducting software-driven on-line searching. The CNNIC conducted its on-line survey December 15-31, 1999. Survey questionnaires were posted on the front pages of famous Web sites in China. The survey is strongly supported by almost all the well-known Chinese ISPs and ICPs. The on-line survey received 202,432 valid responses which were used to compile the final results. CNNIC has established the survey as a semi-annual activity. SINA.com was also voted top Chinese language web site in CNNIC's June 1999 survey. In addition to CNNIC's number one ranking, SINA.com was judged the best overall site in the CTC Online contest of web sites that focus on Mainland China. The contest is held annually and judged by the China Internet Contest Organizing Committee, with winners determined by initial committee recommendation and on-line national polling.
