Biotech Investors Rewarded for Patience

The Nasdaq Biotech Index, which includes more than 200 U.S. and European companies, is up over 60 percent for the first two months of this year, making it the Nasdaq's best performing group.

What's more, the startling gains follow a 101 percent jump for the sector in 1999, a year in which investors finally sat up and took notice of terminology such as "the human genome," "genomics," and "gene expression."

The biotech index is up 630 percent since early 1994. That eclipses a 275 percent gain for the average large U.S. drugmaker during those years and a 192 percent gain for the broad-based Standard & Poors 500 Index.

It also overshadows a 424 percent gain for the Nasdaq Composite Index, which is full of Internet as well as biotech stocks. [...]
