Satellites are designed to survive this type of event. Failures in the past have generally involved satellites with pre-existing electronic problems.

GEOS are more exposed than LEOs to radiation as they lie outside the Van Allen belts. Of course some charged particles do follow electromagnetic force lines to impinge on the Earth's atmosphere at the poles, a phenomenon that causes auroral displays. The IRID satellites pass through the polar region and hopefully were designed with this exposure in mind.

By the way, there are 66 IRID satellites, not 3.

I wonder if people at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (the only CME I had ever heard about (until a few minutes ago)) will contact astronomers complaining about the use of "CME" ?
