Modern psychiatry is based on the desire to understand the human mind and the way it works. It is hardly surprising that the people who began the inquiry did not arrive at the ultimate answers. Human understanding does not work that way. Somebody asks a question, and proposes an answer. Others support, oppose, advance theories of their own. At each step understanding grows.

We owe a huge debt to Freud and his peers, not because of the content of his theories but because he dared to open to rational inquiry a field which had for centuries been the exclusive domain of superstition. And though we've all heard horror stories about shrinks, the truth remains that thousands of people are successfully treated every day for mental illnesses that would have destroyed their lives not long ago. Modern psychiatry is a long way from perfect, but it's a lot better than calling the village exorcist.
