You understand that ex-Senator Gore might have had some clout with Democrats but nothing with Republicans. Now, had he been a conservative Democrat (crypto-Republican) he might have had some influence with his old Republicans counterparts on Congress. I have had a substantial amount of experience as a lobbyist in Sacramento, Springfield, Honolulu, and Washington. I've lobbied senators on the train on the way to vote. I know a lot about this stuff (but not very recent relationships. There are no universally respected Senators, but most of them (except McCain) have good friends. Dan Inouye, for instance, has enormous influence with the chairman of the Defense Appropriations subcommittee, because, I believe when Dan was chairman, he treated him honorably and let him win a lot for his state. They act almost as co-chairmen. I once helped to pass a big appropriation for our university with the late Senator Matsunaga. That man had chits dating back 30 years. He got me appointments with people who owed him favors and I got notes that said the Secretary or this or that or Senator so and so had no objection to our bill (which was a good bill but very particularistic). The key was getting an assistant professorship at our university for the son of the house agriculture chairman. Corrupt? I don't know. Not my job. But both the Gores were not popular cross-aisle Senators. One must hire lobbyists from both sides of the aisle. Most people don't know whom to hire.
