Actually, it is quite a bit like calling the village exorcist. The recovery rate of people in "talking therapy" is about that expected of a placebo.

Again, Neocon, one has to question the studies and the definition of "recovery." Speaking as a person who has experienced the best of "talking therapy," I can tell you that it can produce far more than "recovery." It can yield a profound and beneficial change in the way a person lives each day.

Going beyond studies and looking at living people, I can also tell you that I have friends who would otherwise be incapacitated by depression who function productively and happily while using antidepressants. Despite the controversies around drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft, these drugs have enhanced the quality of life for many people.

Both are a far cry from calling the village exorcist.
