I'd like just to add to your discussion with Bill that reliability comes from having diverse sources. There are many facilities that cannot tolerate current outage rates such as hospitals. With the trading of electricity, the current distribution system is being used in a more efficient but less robust manner, making outages more frequent.

Hospitals, etc have traditionally used stand-by generators that require extensive maintenance and monitoring. Fuel cells allow the conventional power grid to become the back-up. While the fuel cell is working, excess power is supplied to the grid, any failure in the grid will be immediately detected, thus the stand-by is constantly scrutinized. The economics of the fuel cell can then be subsidized by the stand-by generators that can be eliminated.

Good Thoughts: My dream is that eventually I will produce hydrogen at my home, compress it and store it for the fuel cell. Maybe the sun is the power source that provides the energy to generate hydrogen. Soon real soon we will be completely independent.
