Re gook remark:

Given how much McCain sacrificed in defending the Vietnamese from communist aggression, I think he should be allowed to call his former captors whatever the hell he wants.

I would like to see him clarify explicitly his use of the term, i.e., say that he reserves the term ONLY for his torturers and their ilk and not just any Vietnamese or the Vietnamese people. I agree he leaves himself open to misunderstanding with his shooting from the hip here. I would be dismayed if he means to refer to Vietnamese people in general. He does need to clarify this.

Keep in mind that McCain has been one of those senators in the forefront of the move to reestablish diplomatic relations with Hanoi and to put the war behind us as two countries. He bears no pathological grudges as far as I can see, despite sleazy right-wing Senate whisper campaigns to the contrary. He has also declined to support the never-ending kooky Oliver Stonesque fantasies, unsupported by any credible evidence, that some U.S. servicemen are still being held captive over there. (I image he's equally dismissive of people who are convinced they've met alien visitors from beyond the asteroid belt.) Good for him. I'll be the first one to look at credible evidence for either phenomenon, but show me the data. Anyway, I digress....
