I agree. As a matter of fact, I took the indirect route and got into Corel in anticipation of Judge Jackson's ruling (I'd been in and out of Borland/Inprise for years; made good money on Borland, didn't do so well with Inprise). It pretty much worked out as you suggest, although the panic spike came in conjunction with Comdex ... during the Linux craze.

Playing the more direct route would be a little too risky for me. I have no problem with the idea of shorting, but I tend to be pretty careful with it. I'm not self-destructive, and betting against M/S strikes me as a shortcut to the poorhouse. I don't mean it can't (or shouldn't) be done. I just mean that it's not my piece of cake.
