hmaly,

Intel will probably come up with special benchmarks which will enhance ALU as percentage of ops in that routine, and therefore come up with unusually high score

It doesn't make any performance difference how often the ALU is used. The only time that a fast ALU will make any difference is when the pipeline drains, at which time it will refill faster.

The performance is determined by the slowest pipe stage, not the fastest. The fast ALU is like having a strong link in an otherwise weak chain. It does not improve the quality of the chain.

Mr hamly I sense your displeasure with Athlon's poor scores in Integer performance and your frequent references to my occasional reminders about who holds the worlds fastest SPECint scores. I hope you aren't under the impression that SPECint scores are under Intel's control or that Intel's compilers have a significant effect on those scores. I think that is a lame excuse to sooth the damaged pride of those who have placed all their hopes on Athlon being a superior architecture. I think the best course for you is to take your complaints directly to the SPEC organization and ask them to come up with some other gauge, perhaps one which relies more heavily on blasting mutant aliens (TM EPhud '98).
