Barry,

That was a good article by Dvorak. I have been sending emails to abuse@whoever for most of the trojan horse/Back Orifice type of pings, and get nothing but automated responses.

Dvorak's right that they don't care, I think. The more I think about this, the more the onus to stop the script kiddies, or really any hacker, is on the originating ISP. They've got software to do this. All it takes is their commitment to police their own neighborhood. I hate to say it, but it might just take another durn law to make them do it. But if those universities that provided the zombie machines a week ago had installed and maintained the correct virus protection and the correct out-bound packet filtering software, those DoS hacks couldn't have occurred. They claim to be worried about openness and accessibility being compromised, but that's BS -- an excuse for laziness. You can have an open, accessible network that has virus protection and polices it's own traffic.

To me, it ultimately comes down to being a good citizen. As a service provider that helps enable the single greatest revolution in the last 100 years, it is incumbent on them to make sure they're not part of the problem. It's either that, or unhook your T1 from the net.

Grrrr...

OK, rant off.

edited to add that I hope the parents of the kids doing this kind of stuff have some backbone and put some restrictions on them, if not a good whoopin'. Not likely, but that's my hope.
