Dubya is not his father. He proved that in Texas, a state which twice rejected his moderate father for statewide office and twice elected the son.

If anything McCain is like GHWB, a man of no real conviction, running on a resume, looking to be someone. You might say that he is the evil of the lessers.

Your idea of "winning" moderates (oxymoron) has been repudiated at every turn. I was there in 1976 when I heard that familiar refrain about a conservative not being electable and that Ford stood a better chance than Reagan. Reagan won the primaries, Ford lost the election Reagan would have won.

Reagan ran twice as a strong conservative and won two landslides, carrying states "moderate" Republicans can't, like MA and NY.

GHWB ran a Reagan's heir and won because of Reagan. He governed as a "moderate" and was rewarded with 37% against two nothing opponents.

Bob Dole, another "moderate", tried to morph for a couple of months as a conservative and achieved 42% for his years of moderation against an incumbent so weak he couldn't achieve a majority even in boom times.

But McCain is not even a moderate, he is worse. He is someone so devoid of principle that he is frightening. He is the anti-Reagan, which is why the anti-Reagans love him. Not only will McCain not speak truth to power, but he will feed power more power, buying their praise. That's what his "reforms" are all about, silencing the opposition to Big Media, Big Labor and the Liberal agenda.
