Joe,

If a processor has a 20 stage pipeline, does every instruction need to go through all the stages?

Good question. Willy has a special feature which is intended to specifically avoid some of the pipe stages, called a trace cache- which stores decoded instructions. This can potentially reduce the number of bubbles on a branch misprediction.

Unfortunately for Willy marketers, ALU instructions can not bypass many of the "slow" pipe stages, and Willy is condemned to run at a miserable 1.5 GHz.
