Wrong.

Bush lost his base because governed against them. The economy was not bad under Bush. He broke his big election promise for no good reason and then mocked his base. Spending exploded and he raised taxes. Bush was w/o a rudder, a directionless moderate, and it showed.

Ford lost because he was similarly feckless. Sure he freed Poland during his debate with the peanut farmer. And remember his great WIN button program? What a maroon. But a moderate one who picked a leading liberal as his VP, only later to dump him.

I remember how the 1976 convention delegates weeped after Reagan spoke, knowing they had nominated a loser, an inferior man.

>>During a roaring economy, the incumbent has the edge against a radical conservative. McCain, as a moderate, has a big advantage over Gore, as he alone can draw well among independents and Reagan Democrats.

Wrong.

1) There will be no incumbent and

2) Reagan Democrats are not drawn to moderates, they are drawn to conservatives on social issues. So-called "moderates" do nothing for them. That's why Bush and Dole failed to deliver. So would McCain.
