Buck,

"Well, in the interest of finding application Gorillas, is there any chance a standard for measurement might emerge in this field, a la Nielsen for TV?"

Right now, Media Metrix and Nielson Net Ratings are the two companies battling for the number 1 position in the 3rd party audience measurement field. Media Metrix is really number 1 right now, but has left the door open with some recent screw ups. Nielsen has a much cleaner methodology than Media Metrix...and has its TV experience behind them as well.

But again, this is panel based measurement...all site page view/visitor numbers are PROJECTED from panel activity. Ideally, Media Metrix or NetRatings could partner with somebody to place software in all "machines" in order to track all user activity. Don't see this right now. Maybe someday. In the meantime, it's all about "creative counting."

"On a different note...as director of strategic planning and market research, did you ever expect to be up to your ears in statistical analysis? <G>"

Funny you should say this...I've recently been dusting off my grad school stats books to get fully up to speed on research methodologies, statistical significance, multiple regression, etc. Too be expected...when you work for a net company you wear many hats...some of which don't necessarily fit to well.
