No, not at all. In the advanced-degree case and in Amazon's case there are deliberate outlays and a deliberate delay of earnings in order to maximize earnings and competitive position in the long run.

It's a reasonable parallel. Of course, some parents might argue that the student is a loser, a burden, and a lousy model!
