How absurd. Bush is nowhere NEAR Reagan as a national politician.

Reagan fought the tax exempt status of racist institutions like Bob Jones University. GWB appeared there shamelessly. That's the difference. Reagan was perceived as a unifier, who never to my memory outlandishly offended people of color and Catholics. But Bush just doesn't "get it", and the chickens are coming home to roost. As is being reported:

Bush strategists were hoping South Carolina would give their man the momentum. McCain countered with an endorsement from Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who had supported Bush but said he was put off by the candidate's appeal in South Carolina, including his visit to Bob Jones University.

King, a Catholic, said America needs a ``conservative who will not yield to the temptation of pandering in ways that support bigotry.'

King speaks for many Catholics, who are equally offended.

I am aware of what he says in scripted "speeches." Actions speak louder than words, and a man of conscience would not act as he did.

You are quite right concerning the critics.

We are secure in the knowledge that Bush - or McCain for that matter - would be far preferable to either AlGore, Bradley or Buchanan/Perot.
