hi myron,

well, let's see if we can change some things around and make it better for you.

first off, it looks like you've added 32 mb of memory? that correct? and you've added more storage (not memory) to the tune of an additional 10 gb?

to view some of these specs you can go start, settings, control panel, system. the 'general' page will mention your ram, as will the 'performance' tab. then open 'my computer' and click on the (C:) drive icon. it will display a pie chart showing drive capacity. additionally, you will find storage capacity info under system tools, system information.

the 'locked by an application' that you are seeing is, to my knowledge, windows' way of saying that another program (systemworks) is running the applications like defrag and scandisk that windows ordinarily performs. it is not any sort of an error message.

looking now at your system's crashy behavior, it is probably directly attributable to norton's crashguard. turn that component off at startup. you don't have to uninstall. i have version 2, so my interface is slightly different than yours, but i find the component start up menu under 'options' on the norton utilities page. simply uncheck crashguard so it will not run on start up. this setting will take place when you reboot. you can also turn crashguard off by running your mouse pointer over the norton icon in the systray, then right-clicking the cg icon. select exit, then ok.

you mentioned that you uninstalled the antivirus component. that is a mistake, imo. along with utilities, av is the best thing norton offers. perhaps you were singling out the wrong guilty party for deletion when you should have been looking at crashguard. av should only be shut down temporarily during software installs.

one last suggestion, myron. if you haven't run norton system check or windoctor for awhile, now might be a good time. i recommend system check, as it does the same thing as windoctor and then some. look under 'find and fix problems' in utilities.

i hope i've answered a few of your questions, and pointed you in a good direction. ask away if i have not made myself clear on anything.

:)

mark

Myron, mr mark has given you his thoughts on
your problem. All I want to say is: I use Nortom Utilities
and prefer them to the Win 98 utilities, BUT do not use
Norton Crashguard any more for the reasons you mentioned.
[its constant behind the scenes monitoring has to slow
things down, even if no crash is imminent]
