Ralph,

>I'm no longer surprised at folks dismissing a horse who has just turned in a good last race.<

My experience tells me that horses with only one big last out race do not hold that form nearly as well as those that have done it on a consistent basis. I think that accounts for the odds a bit. However, lightly raced 2yos and 3yos are the most likely to do it because they can improve in sudden bursts. I thought the price was generous.

This is the way I handle it. If the odds are telling me that the public thinks a horse like that is a cinch to repeat the effort I look elsewhere. If they are discarding him as a fluke I am very interested and start digging for reasons that he might be on an upswing.
