In fact, as shown in the chart below, households have been net sellers of stocks for the past five years. (The data plotted include some minor amounts of stocks bought/sold by commercial banks, thrifts and brokers for their own accounts. But the bulk of the data are households direct as well as indirect - e.g. mutual funds, pension funds and trust accounts - acquisitions of corporate equities, including foreign equities. And, yes, the data do include 401(k) accounts.)"
