Korea chip industry's 2000 capex seen up 63.9 pct

SEOUL, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Commerce Ministry said on Monday that South Korea's
semiconductor industry plans $3.62 billion in facilities and equipment investment in 2000, up
63.9 percent from last year.

The Korean semiconductor industry plans to spend about $760 million in new production
facilities and $2.86 billion in upgrading existing facilities, the ministry said in a statement.

Research and development spending is expected to reach about $530 million this year, up 24.9
percent from $430 million last year, it said.

Market research firm IC Insights Inc has forecast the South Korean chip industry's facilities and equipment investment will reach
$4.3 billion this year, the ministry said.

Major chip makers in South Korea include Samsung Electronics Co , Hyundai Electronics Industries Co , Anam Semiconductor
Inc and a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc
