Weekly CPU prices from Sharkys:

sharkyextreme.com

On the Intel front, the 'mid-range' (seems strange classing a 600MHz CPU as 'mid-range') Pentium III 600's have all dropped in price. The Pentium III 600MHz is now priced some $23 cheaper at $332, whilst the 600E dropped by $32 to a rump $333. Everyone's favorite overclocking animal, the Pentium III ('Flip Chip') FC-PGA CPUs held firm in price (the 550MHz dropped by $3). Still no sign of the Pentium III 750/800MHz (apart from in Dell and HP systems).

On the AMD front, Athlon prices continue to drop mostly at the high end. The 800MHz fell by $29 down to $754. No sign of the 850MHz yet but you can be sure that when it does become widely available that the 800Mhz will become a good bit cheaper. Patience.

With this past week's announcements at IDF, expect a few price drops and the 'price war' to begin ramping up again. Only this time at the 1GHz mark. We were at AMD's secret location on-site in Palm Springs and saw the 1.1GHz Athlon running with new K75"Thunderbird" core, which will go head to head with Intel's 1GHZ Pentium III's later on this year. Very impressive.

If you are an online journalist (count yourself lucky) and are making your way down to Hanover Germany for this year's CeBit you'd best cancel your plans. Online journalists aren't going to be permitted. Fancy that?

Scot, apparently this is becoming the norm...online journalists were not allowed in at the recent Goldman Sachs event.....the news gets online to fast and is not fair to the printed media....read Wall Street Journal.
