Goldman Sachs To Offer Financial Products Via Online Brokers

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Goldman Sachs Group Inc. will tie up with Japanese online stock trading companies to sell a lineup of investment products targeting individual investors in Japan, sources at the leading U.S. investment bank said Friday.

As the first step, the company will sell a new product from March that securitizes options on stocks through DLJ Direct SFG Securities Inc. These securities will be issued by its British affiliate, Goldman Sachs International. Initially, the U.K. unit will securitize options on 50 stocks, including those in Yahoo Japan Corp. (4689), Sony Corp. (6758), NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) (9437) and Softbank Corp. (9984). The firm hopes to eventually increase the number to about 150.

Next to cash stock investment, this type of high-risk and high-return product is very popular among individual investors in Germany, France and other European countries.

The firm plans to gradually expand its product range and increase its business partners, including online brokerage Monex Inc., a Sony affiliate.

The company believes demand for financial products by individuals will grow rapidly amid record-low interest rates. Another factor behind the company's move is the large amount of postal savings expected to be redeemed from this year.

By partnering with online brokerages, the company hopes to save the cost of opening new outlets.
