Derek,

Thanks for the link.

The 8 MB Memory Card intended for use in PlayStation2 appears to be a MagicGate variety of Memory Stick, the chewing gum-like option offered by Sony.

I think the features of PlayStation2 that would worry me might be an interface for ripping CD's and downloading directly to an mp3 player. (Maybe they should just throw in an mp3 player with the purchase?) Another use could be something along the lines of a photoviewer. (So Mom and Dad can look at their pictures from the family reunion on PlayStation without having to download the Memory Stick to a PC). Seems to me that that will go over like a lead balloon.

Either way, the utility of the MagicGate slot needs to be combined with other devices in the home, namely a digital camera with a Memory Stick slot or an mp3 player with a Memory Stick slot.

Finally, any idea who manufactures the controller chip and flash memory for Sony?

Derek, many thanks for the comparison between Memory Stick and other formats. Is it correct to conclude that, at least in theory, the MemoryStick cannot exceed the performance of CF or SD cards? If so, as the industry matures, Sony will find itself unable to become the lowest cost producer. Art

Derek and Thread,

CeBit is starting this week...

www3.cebit.de

They are planning live updates and press releases on Real Audio which will be supported by Deutsche Welle.

Now an OT tidbit...

I visited the site linked above. If you look there is a German language course which is supported by the Goethe Institue.

Last night I downloaded all 4 lessons to my PC and copied them onto my CompactFlash card. These are free mp3 downloads and are in a Winamp format. My trusty old Cassiopeia E-100 recognized the files immediately and I listened to a few of them. Excellent fidelity. Actually it puts the Audible.com content and playback quality to shame.
